WA: No immedate attempts will be made to refloat stranded ship

No immediate attempts will be made to refloat a 200,000-tonne bulk carrier which hasrun aground off the northern coast of Western Australia.

The Hanjin Dampier -- a Korean-owned carrier transporting a shipment of iron ore --struck a sandbar off the Pilbara port of Dampier yesterday.

Dampier Port Authority CEO GREG TRENBERTH says some iron ore must be removed from thecarrier before it can be refloated.

He says the the earliest date to refloat the vessel is September 7.

The carrier was heading for Korea when a mechanical fault created steering problemsand caused it to run aground.

Mr TRENBERTH says the 300-metre ship doesn't appear to pose any environmental risks.

A combination of tugboats and booms have been deployed in a one kilometre radius aroundthe stranded ship to deal with any pollution which might occur.
