Fed: Stewart returns to NRL action after not guilty plea
By Doug Conway, Senior Correspondent
SYDNEY, April 7 AAP - Brett Stewart will make his first appearance for troubled NRL
premiers Manly this weekend after facing court on sexual assault charges he plans to fight.
The dumped face of rugby league looked taut and drawn when he appeared for the first
time in Manly local court on Tuesday.
His case has been adjourned until May 26 to the Downing Centre local court, the same
central Sydney court that recently handed down a suspended jail sentence to swimmer Nick
D'Arcy.
D'Arcy's assault case took a year, despite the swimmer's guilty plea.
Stewart has pleaded not guilty to offences relating to a 17-year-old girl allegedly
committed after a booze-fuelled season launch last month.
He is charged with having sexual intercourse without the consent of the teenager between
7.45pm and 8.05pm on March 6 at North Manly.
He is also charged with assault with an act of indecency, namely that he "forced his
tongue into her mouth".
Magistrate Margaret Quinn continued Stewart's bail and excused him from appearing in
May if he was legally represented.
Ms Quinn also extended by three months an apprehended violence order (AVO) banning
Stewart from approaching or contacting the teenager.
Wearing a dark suit and striped tie, Stewart entered the court after emerging from
a silver BMW with his lawyer and making a speedy line-break through a thick media scrum.
He was inside the brown-brick Manly courthouse for an hour, though his hearing was
over in a few minutes.
Stewart did not speak.
His not guilty pleas were delivered by his lawyer as the 24-year-old Manly star sat
quietly in court.
He made no comment as he left the court, head down through the media throng and back
to his waiting car.
Stewart will make his return to the football field this Sunday at Brookvale against
Wests Tigers, and how his club needs him.
The reigning NRL and world champions sit at the bottom of the table after suffering
four defeats during his NRL-enforced, month-long absence.
Manly has selected Stewart to play this week, with coach Des Hasler and chief executive
Grant Mayer both insisting Stewart is definitely "okay in the mind" to take the field
on Sunday.
Captain Matt Orford says the four-match ban for being drunk in public has "stung" Stewart,
adding: "He'll be itching to get out there and do what he does best - score some tries."

A woman walking her dog in Callan Park .. near the former Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital

BURNES has been remanded in custody by Magistrate BRIAN MALONEY .. who's adjourned
the case to the Supreme Court for sentencing.

and was then shot twice more .. indicating an execution-style murder.
According to a statement tendered as evidence .. BURNES told police he was responsible
for the shooting .. and was later covertly recorded discussing it while walking through

Qld: Greens decide not to allocate preferences
BRISBANE, Dec 3 AAP - Labor will face a tougher battle to win marginal seats at the
next state election with the Queensland Greens today deciding not to allocate preferences.
The Greens have traditionally left it to party branches to decide on preferences.
But the party's state council today decided to make it a statewide policy at the next
election not to preference any major party.
The Greens' 75 candidates secured almost eight per cent of first preference votes at
the September 9 election and the party's preferences were crucial for Labor in a number
of marginal seats.
Greens spokesman Drew Hutton said it was also possible the party could run a "just
vote one" campaign, which could cause even greater problems for Labor.
"You would find a whole swag of seats being lost for Labor at the next election," Mr Hutton said.
"The Beattie government is so far behind the eight ball in important areas like climate
change, energy, water and accountability - they are an appalling government."

Hamilton plays dastardly hand.(Sport)
Byline: SIMON CASS reports from Barcelona
FORMULA ONE has turned into the Wacky Races this season and when it comes to the sport's Spanish fans, Lewis Hamilton is only too happy to assume the role of Dick Dastardly.
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has largely been in a class of his own. But the raft of rule changes designed to improve overtaking opportunities have produced more action than the likes of Penelope Pitstop or The Anthill Mob ever managed.
On Spanish soil Hamilton is suited to the Dick Dastardly part thanks to his feud with Fernando Alonso -- Peter Perfect to the locals -- when the duo shared McLaren's garage four years ago.
Rather than try to challenge being the bad guy, Hamilton, spurred on by McLaren's image gurus and their Vodafone sponsors, has opted to embrace it. He has even recorded a series of internet videos highlighting that every good fight needs a hero and a villain.
It is just a shame fresh-faced Hamilton would struggle to grow Dastardly's trademark moustache. If he could he would doubtless be twirling it.
'It takes me a long time to grow anything so I'm not going there,' joked the 2008 world title winner (right). 'If I could I would, just to take the mickey.' That mischievous streak extends to spoiling Alonso's party here just as the former double world champion extended his contract with Ferrari until the end of the 2016 campaign.
There is, of course, the small matter of Red Bull's Vettel standing in the way of a battle between Hamilton, who won in China, and Alonso. McLaren and Ferrari have brought a swathe of updates to the Circuit de Catalunya in the hope of catching Red Bull.
But Hamilton was forced to admit that should Vettel qualify in pole position, the result is likely to be a forgone conclusion.
'When Vettel starts on pole position it's easy because he has clear air,' said Hamilton. 'It's pretty much done and dusted by turn one because he's able to look after his tyres and his engine.'
Diabetes in Control Opens Up Its Clinical Presentation Library for Use by the Medical Community.
Diabetes in Control (http://www.diabetesincontrol.com), an e-newsletter dedicated to keeping clinicians current with the rapid changes in diabetes care, expands its quest to provide them with the best tools for their practice. With the release of the company's growing archive of medical presentation highlights for the medical community, available for download (http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/articles/homerun-slides) at no cost, Diabetes in Control continues to innovate in sharing new and advanced methods to improve outcomes and standards of care. This archive will continue to grow as the company adds its presentation of the week from its weekly Clinical Mastery Series. Complimentary professional subscriptions are available here: http://www.diabetesincontrol.com/subscribe (see also Diabetes).
"By opening our growing slide presentation archives to the medical community, we hope to accelerate the adoption of best practices and deepen the knowledge base of medical practitioners," says Stephen Freed, R. Ph, Publisher of Diabetes in Control. "Time is against us all in the fight against diabetes. Our archive will save clinicians and researchers time and effort as they create important presentations for their colleagues and patients."
"We began assembling the presentation slide library one year ago in response to an extensive survey of medical practitioners conducted by Diabetes in Control," says David Joffe, Editor in Chief of Diabetes in Control. "Clinical slide presentations were among the most-requested new features. Medical professionals are incredibly pressed for time, and this is one way we can help. Also, we're committed not only to education but also retention. And people tend to absorb multi-sensory information (such as graphical slides) better than simple text."
The online publication combines Diabetes in Control's two notable diabetes clinical newsletters with articles and writings from leading medical practitioners and industry experts; news that focuses on innovative methods to improving outcomes and standards of care; just-released information on drugs, devices, treatments and services; and free CE and CME opportunities.
"Our publication is becoming increasingly important considering the decline in the availability of diabetes educators, as the epidemic grows," says Andrew Young, president of Diabetes in Control. "Also, diabetes practitioners are so pressed with their hands-on work, they have little time to devote to ongoing education. Diabetes in Control is easily accessible, free, reliable and ever-current, providing a welcome solution through Internet-supported medical education."

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- AirNet Systems, Inc. (NYSE: ANS) announced earnings of $.28 per share today for the quarter ended June 30, 1997, compared to $.24 adjusted pro forma earnings per share for the quarter ended June 30, 1996. These figures represent record quarterly revenues and earnings for AirNet Systems and are prior to the restatement of the 1996 acquisition of Express Convenience Center, Inc. ("ECC"), which is being accounted for as a pooling of interests.
After restating the comparable 1996 period, net revenues for the quarter increased 9.9% to $23.1 million from $21.0 million in 1996. Restated average daily air transportation revenues increased 16.3%. Net income was $3.5 million versus adjusted pro forma net income of $2.9 million for the comparable 1996 period, an increase of 20.7%.
Record quarterly gross revenues for the Company's check delivery services were $19.4 million compared to $17.1 million for the same quarter in 1996, an increase of 13.6%. The Company's gross revenues from small package delivery services increased to a record $4.0 million, a 59.1% increase over 1996 levels prior to restatement for the ECC acquisition, and a 10.6% increase after restating results.
During the quarter, the Company changed its fiscal year end from September 30 to December 31. Consequently, the Company is reporting its second quarter under the new reporting year.
Jerry Mercer, Chairman, President and CEO, said, "We are very pleased with the continued strength of our ongoing businesses, and quite proud of the record results posted for this quarter. Additionally, the AirNet sales force is now active in over 15 cities, introducing our LateNight and BusinessDay products to the marketplace. We look forward to increasing market penetration and earnings contributions from these products over the next 12 to 18 months. Our recent acquisitions of Pacific Air Charter and Data Air Courier are significant strategic and synergistic moves that should provide additional growth for the future."
EBITDA, EBIT and net income percentages each improved for the three months ending June 30, 1997, compared with the same quarter in 1996. Commenting on the Company's performance, Eric Roy, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, said, "We continue to be proud of our abilities to deliver enhanced margins while growing our company. These comparisons for the quarter ended June 30, 1997, are enhanced by the fact that the prior year figures are not adjusted for the excise tax expiration in 1996, a tax which now is being collected."
Don Strench, Vice President of Corporate Development, added, "We were pleased to finalize the Data Air Courier acquisition on July 31. This transaction moves our annualized revenue run-rate in excess of $100 million, a milestone for AirNet Systems."

(OTC:DLCR) David Loren Corp.
Tuesday June 3, 6:00 am ET
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 3 - David Loren Corporation , a company engaged in the design, production and wholesale merchandising of quality clothing to major department stores, mass merchants, specialty chains and direct-to-consumer merchants, is pleased to issue a letter to its shareholders from David Loren, its Chief Executive Officer, providing an overview of recent developments.
To David Loren Corporation Shareholders,
As CEO of your company, I would like to take this opportunity to report to you, our shareholders, on the progress we have made over the past several months. This is a very exciting time for David Loren Corporation as we advance toward achieving the milestones we have targeted for 2008.
As most of you are aware the retail industry appears to be in a period of consolidation and restructuring leaving the manufacturing side of the business with an ever-shrinking list of merchant customers. In order to respond to and take advantage of the changing nature of the retail landscape we too have changed our business model. I am very pleased to announce that our own restructuring is complete and that the retail merchants we have targeted are responding well. We have been successful in expanding our vendor relationships with some of the top tier retailers in the country and we have done this in what we consider to be record time.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Company's restructuring and expansion is that we have established relationships with a Shanghai fabric mill and an experienced Hong Kong production team, enabling David Loren Corporation to function as a fully vertical operation. This is a major milestone for the Company since in the current economic climate many of the major retailers prefer to deal only with companies who have a vertical operation. Since "going vertical" we are receiving inquires from retailers about both product development and our production capability and capacity.
Even as we add retailers to our customer base, David Loren Corporation is expanding product development and production into other product categories and additional store departments including men's wear. Merchants are able to select from products in a variety of classifications and fabrications best suited for their needs and then begin the process of development to production.
We continue to do production in Mexico for a leading international specialty retailer that operates more than 3,100 stores worldwide. David Loren-produced dresses have been sold through one of the retailer's four branded chains in the United States, Canada, Japan and the Orient; we are currently in production for a second chain and hope to add a third in 2008. David Loren Corporation is very proud that we have been successful in maintaining a 100% performance rate in production for this retailer to date.
I appreciate the continued support and loyalty of our shareholders and I remain dedicated to taking necessary steps to build and maintain shareholder value. I am very excited about the Company's potential for growth in 2008 and 2009 and look forward to communicating all of David Loren Corporation's new developments and accomplishments to the investment community and the general public.

Puppy Owners Sue Pembroke Pines, Fla., Pet Store After Dogs Fall Sick, Die.
By Nicole T. Lesson, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Dec. 12--Six people claiming their puppies became sick or died filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Pembroke Pines pet store where they purchased the animals.
The six plaintiffs, including a mother and son who bought one of the puppies, claim the owners of Wizard of Claws misrepresented the quality of its puppies, violating state law. Three dogs died and two are alive, the suit states.
The suit, filed in Broward Circuit Court, comes six weeks after a lawsuit was lodged against Puppy Palace Inc., a pet store with locations in Hollywood and Boynton Beach. That suit's nine plaintiffs claimed the stores also misrepresented the quality of its puppies.
In the suit filed against Wizard of Claws, the plaintiffs said the puppies sold by the store were sick with genetic diseases such as hip dysplasia, a bleeding disorder and pneumonia.
The plaintiffs, including two South Florida residents, ask to be reimbursed for the price of their dogs and veterinary bills.
Terri vomSaal, of Cooper City, was searching for a papillon puppy and found a newspaper ad that led her to Wizard of Claws. In July 2002, she bought an 8-week-old puppy for $950 and named her Tara.
Four months later, the puppy went blind, became sick and later died from a congenital problem called hydrocephalus, a condition in which excessive fluid is found in the brain, the suit said.
"To say Tara suffered is an understatement," said vomSaal, who added that she accumulated $2,531 in veterinarian bills. "I did my research and saw the price was average, and they said they worked for a select group of breeders. I usually get my dogs from animal control or the Humane Society, but I wanted a papillon and they are not easy to come by."
After Tara died, vomSaal researched the Internet. There, she said she found other people who said Wizard of Claws sold them sick dogs.
"What they've done and what they continue to do, I want to see them get shut down," said vomSaal, who was given another puppy as a replacement.
Some plaintiffs and other animal activists plan to demonstrate at 11 a.m. Saturday near the store at 9113 Taft St.
Jim Anderson, the manager for Wizard of Claws, which is owned by his wife, Gilda, said he has sold about 3,800 dogs in two years, with 80 percent coming from Internet sales.
"This is six people in 4,000, and no matter what you do and no matter how hard you try, they won't be happy," Anderson said as he stood outside the store while looking over a copy of the lawsuit.
"We are not interested in selling sick animals; we are lovers of animals."
Anderson said his store is not violating any state law, gets its dogs only from reputable breeders and guarantees dogs genetically for one to three years.
Marcy LaHart, who is acting as co-counsel for the Wizard of Claws plaintiffs, also is the lead attorney for those who sued Puppy Palace in late October. Since then, LaHart said, she has heard from about 90 people who bought dogs from Puppy Palace and claimed that the animals suffered from congenital defects and became sick.
"I hope anyone that will be adding a new four-legged member to the family during the holidays will not support puppy mills by buying from a pet store, particularly when 1,000 dogs and cats are killed in South Florida shelters every month," LaHart said.
As of Nov. 26, the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services had processed at least 10 complaints filed by people who said they bought sick dogs from Wizard of Claws, the lawsuit states.
Shannah Diaz purchased a Maltese puppy she named Prince in September 2002. For nine months, until April 27, he was normal, she said.
"Then he started acting not right," said Diaz, of Miami. "I took him to an emergency vet that night and he died that evening."
A necropsy performed on the 6-pound puppy found that he had a congenital/hereditary bleeding disorder, said Diaz, who wants to be reimbursed $1,538 for the cost of the dog and veterinary bills.

Sparta Calendars Continues Their Penny-a-Day Strategy to Grow a Business.
Los Alamitos, Ca (Vocus/PRWEB) April 04, 2011
With high-resolution digital cameras and high-definition televisions revolutionizing the way consumers view the world, it's safe to say that Sparta Calendars pictures are worth far more than just a thousand words these days. Companies seeking to expand their businesses must keep in mind that a picture is also worth thousands of dollars and potentially thousands of customers. Sparta Calendars penny-a-day strategy will keep a business's name, image and message in front of their customers, and keep their business well-positioned to gain valuable market share and profits.
In fact, studies show advertising during particularly difficult economic times provides a significant opportunity for all businesses to capture valuable market share, build equity, strengthen customer bases and forge lasting inroads with competitors that have chosen to cut their own advertising.
Sparta's 2011 imprinted calendars are the best example of cost effective picture advertising. The wall calendar has been around for more than 100 years and is showing no signs of its advanced age. Fortune 500 companies use the Sparta Calendars program to spread awareness of their brands, and it is an inexpensive and highly effective way to convey a great deal of information about a company through pictures. These award-winning calendars are a subtle means of advertising; instead of an obnoxious sales pitch, a throwaway flyer or a run-of-the-mill e-mail, a beautiful wall calendar to hang at home or in the office is a daily reminder to customers not to forget about your business. Company calendars remind customers what your business can do, how your business can help them and, most important, how they can reach your business.
The average household uses at least two calendars every year, and the average office has at least one or two more on the wall. Marketing studies show that 94 percent of calendar recipients can recall the name of the company that gave it to them through simple daily exposure. People look at each calendar an average of 2.8 times a day, or 1,022 times a year, meaning that a $5 investment in a company calendar boils down to the extremely low cost of .005 cents per impression. For roughly a penny a day per customer, businesses can invest in a product that serves as a year-round advertisement, with no other labor or time required. That's a savings of up to 90 percent on advertising compared to newspapers, TV and even the internet.
"Smart businesses are using the Sparta Calendar program to aggressively advertise during these hard economic times to grab market share," said Hap LeCompte of Sparta Calendars, winners of numerous 2011 National Calendar Awards whose clients include many of the Fortune 500. "Our clients demand quality and results, they want marketing strategies that are cost effective, easy to run, use limited resources, are environmentally friendly, high quality and highly effective. These are the reasons why the Sparta Calendar program was created."
A recession provides the perfect advertising storm. Advertising costs are reduced during a down economy, as there is less demand and a business receives greater visibility and voice within their market, with less competition. Now is the perfect time for a business to start a cost effective calendar program to take advantage of the current economic climate.
During recessionary periods, consumers do not stop consuming; consumers just become more selective about what they purchase. Knowing this, advertisers should not stop advertising but rather become more selective advertisers.
The Sparta Calendars program is inexpensive, subtle, and highly effective: beautiful, vibrant pictures in a gift calendar that consumers actually want to receive and will use year-round. Companies should invest in a promotional product that their customers will actually use. "If your promotional product has a chance of being thrown away, stay away!" said LeCompte.

ACLU AND EFF PLAN TO APPEAL RULING IN CASE CHALLENGING GOVERNMENT ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN PRIVATE DATA IN WIKILEAKS INVESTIGATION.
ALEXANDRIA -- The following information was released by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU):
A federal magistrate judge in Virginia ruled today that the government can collect the private records of three Twitter users as part of its investigation related to WikiLeaks, and that those users and the public can be prevented from seeing some of the documents that the government submitted to the court to justify obtaining their records. The court denied the government's request to conduct last month's hearings about the records in secret, however, and the court made public all of the documents related to the users' legal challenge. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union plan to appeal the decision on behalf of their client Birgitta Jonsdottir, an Icelandic parliamentarian.
The secret government demands for information about the subscribers' communications came to light only because Twitter took steps to ensure their customers were notified and had the opportunity to respond. The ACLU and EFF also asked the court to make public any similar orders to any other companies.
"This ruling gives the government the ability to secretly amass private information related to individuals' Internet communications. Except in extraordinary circumstances, the government should not be able to obtain this information in secret. That's not how our system works," said Aden Fine, staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. "If this ruling stands, our client may be prevented from challenging the government's requests to other companies because she might never know if and how many other companies have been ordered to turn over information about her."
"With so much of our digital private information being held by third parties -- whether in the cloud or on social networking sites like Twitter -- the government can track your every move and statement without you ever having a chance to protect yourself," said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn. "We're disappointed that the court did not recognize that people using digital tools deserve basic privacy and that the government should be required to meet a high standard before it demands private information about you from the online services you use, be they Twitter, Facebook, Gmail or Skype."
EFF and the ACLU plan to appeal the ruling on behalf of their client.
Today's ruling and other information about the case are available online at:

Miss Medical Marijuana Modelling Competition Welcomes Contestants In Efforts To Bring Legalization Movement Mainstream.
Oakland, CA (PRWEB) February 12, 2011

A toast to Sabbath we once worshiped.(NEWS)
Byline: JAMES LILEKS; STAFF WRITER
Last week this space discussed whether the smoking ban in bars should be tweaked to unban bar smoking. Now a legislator has introduced a bill that would allow liquor to be sold on Sundays. It's as if every law concerning "vice," to use a quaint term, is up for discussion. Next week they'll reconsider the ban on swearing in front of horses, or approve robot cockfighting at Canterbury. (Expected to be a $12 billion industry by 2147.)
I'd guess the prevailing public mood on the question of Sunday hooch is A) No, and B) Whatever. People in the B camp have responded to Sunday bans with a crafty, ingenious work-around -- they shop on Saturday. I know, I know, sounds unbelievable, but I've seen it happen. Heck, I've done it. You ask: What if you're having a dinner party, and you realize you have no wine? Nightmare! All you can do is bribe your dentist for a tank of laughing gas, put it under the table and open up the valve just a little bit, and serve grape juice. Same difference, except a few people at the table apologize for not flossing more.
The No camp either doesn't see any need to let people sop up Demon Rum any more than necessary, or holds to the idea that Sunday is a special day. That horse is out of the barn, though, and shopping at Target. Wasn't always so. When I grew up in North Dakota, nothing was open on Sunday. The TV would have shows like "Bowling Highlights of 1954," periodically interrupted by a stern-looking fellow who'd say, "Shouldn't you be visiting Grandma today? She'd love to see you."
The mall lots were empty, grocery stores were closed, wolves paced the streets of downtown, snapping at tumbleweeds. You could get milk at a convenience store, but decent people shopped ahead. If you saw someone's car in the Stop-n-Go lot it was like seeing your principal walk out of an adult bookstore.
I exaggerate. Or, more accurately, lie. But Sundays did feel different -- incredibly boring was how the average teen would put it. The world slowed down, practically stopped rotating about 6 p.m. and you woke Monday ready for another five-round bout with the workweek.
For many of today's indispensable busy people, Sunday is just early Monday, you check your e-mail and schedules, which would have been as absurd in 1974 as strolling past your boss' house whistling, in case he saw you and wanted to bark out some instructions on the Johnson Contract. Things could wait.
Not any more! And since we're changing all the rules, perhaps we could allow car dealerships to be open on Sunday. For all I know they don't want to open: You have six years between purchases. You can find an open Saturday in there somewhere, bud. But how many people would bang on the doors with fistfuls of cash, begging to buy a car so they can make a beer run to Wisconsin? Thousands. Well, dozens. Per decade.
Point is, we're trained not to expect cars to be available for inspection on Sunday, just as we would never expect to see alcohol in a grocery store, thanks to the Forcing People to Make Several Stops Act of 1917.
Just to show how peculiar the blue laws get: You can get beer in grocery stores, but it's 3.2, or "Quasi-beer," the weak stuff whose origins trace back to Prohibition. I can see why that distinction would be important if Coolidge was president and the sports section was devoted to flagpole-sitting contests, but as someone who worked in a 3.2 joint in college, it has the same power to make its consumers go wobbly-legged and mumble-mouthed. It's like a car with a top speed of 62 mph and one door -- which you can't buy on Sunday.
Look, you want to make Sunday special, pass a law that bans TV and does a Mubarak on the Internet until midnight, and people who feel compelled to check their work e-mail will be forced to sit in a room and interact with humans instead of preparing for the 7 a.m. meeting about maximizing stakeholder interaction. That would make a difference, but people would really complain. Not that they need TV and the Internet on Sunday. Not like they're addicted. They can stop any time.

Jim Robbie of Moline pulled a Zenith Radionic vacuum tube from his pocket and proclaimed, "These are hard to find, and this is a good place to find it."
Robbie was one of hundreds of ham radio enthusiasts filling the exhibit hall Sunday at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles for the Wheaton Community Radio Amateurs club's annual Mid-Winter Hamfest.
Robbie, a ham radio user for the past 23 years, was attending the show with Dave Mayfield of Moline, a friend he met as a young kid on a ham radio.
"We like to come to this show, and in the past it was really huge," Mayfield said. "But in recent years, eBay has really knocked out sales for dealers at flea markets like this."
That didn't stop hamfest attendees from closely looking over rows of radio transmitters and transceivers, coils, antennae, batteries and mounts.
Dale Kwarta, a member in the Wheaton club since 1983, said the attendance at any ham radio event is down because it is one of numerous "aging hobbies."
Kwarta believes that young people don't realize that ham radio technology is something that will be used in some form or another the rest of their lives.
"This is not a phone," Kwarta said, while taking his cell phone out of his pocket. "It is a cellular radio with a computer in it. Cell phones came from our ham radio technology.
"Hams have been making phone calls out of their cars for free for years," Kwarta said.
If the era of ham radios is being affected by the world of cell phones, text messaging, Internet and chat rooms, it is still vital in the world of emergency communications when amateurs are called in to help during a crisis or for support at major public events.
John Cheney, chairman of the Communications Support Unit trailer on site at the hamfest, said the set of transmitters and transceivers of different frequency levels in the trailer are used for communication operations at various parades or big fundraising events.
Cheney said the Wheaton Club and others like it are part of the Radio Amateur Civilian Emergency Service, allowing them to have radios that can communicate with government equipment if their services are requested during a crisis.
He pointed to Hurricane Katrina as a prime example of how ham radios became vital.
Cheney agreed with others who believe that younger people are not getting involved in ham radios, but he feels that a young person interested in science and technology will continue to be involved.
"Our club is a general interest club, so we have people who are high-frequency enthusiasts, public service, VHF, UHF, pretty much everything," Cheney said. "There are other clubs that are specialized in just one area, such as 'country hunting,' where you are interested in communicating with other parts of the world."
As attendees of many shows, Mayfield and Robbie have seen the ham radio enthusiasts age without much young blood coming on board.
"Fewer kids are doing it," Mayfield said. "Unfortunately, it is a hobby that will be extinct at some point."
Robbie said the use of ham radios in emergencies will likely never cease.
"I don't think people realize how quickly computer and phone communications can be knocked out in a major crisis," Robbie said. "I lived in Florida for a few years before coming back here, and ham radios were vital down there. I think down south, in general, there is more knowledge and appreciation of hams."
Kwarta sees the future of ham radios as more of a technology industry question.
"If young people are not interested in technology, they will not be interested in ham radios," Kwarta said. "Most 'hams' get into technology jobs, and we are down on the number of engineering graduates out there. This is definitely a science and technology hobby."
But with all of the communication available in the world, Robbie was putting up a "no communication" zone for himself on Sunday.
Dressed in his Chicago Bears jersey and hat, Robbie knew he would not be back in Moline in time to watch the Bears game against the Green Bay Packers.
"I am recording it, so I have sent the word out that I want no text messages, phone calls or ham transmissions about who won," Robbie said.
